Financial Metrics
Profitability Ratios
Calculating Return on Investment (ROI) and Profit Margin.
Questions use business investment scenarios with multiple cost categories and a revenue figure. Comparative questions present 3–4 options (products or investments) and ask which has the highest ROI or Profit Margin. Tax rate application is common in net profit reconstruction.
What the exam tests
Definition-to-Term Identification
Match a definition to the correct ratio (e.g., 'measure of profit generated from revenue' = Profit Margin).
Formula Variable Identification
Select the correct formula: Profit Margin = Profit ÷ Revenue; ROI = (Return − Cost) ÷ Cost.
Standard Quantitative Calculation
Given net profit and total revenue, calculate the exact Profit Margin percentage. Given investment return and cost, calculate ROI.
Comparative Investment Analysis
Calculate ratios for multiple investments or product lines to determine which is most profitable (e.g., compare ROI and Profit Margin across Clothes, Raingear, and Sportsgear).
Multi-Step Variable Reconstruction
Calculate intermediate values first: Gross Profit = Revenue − Cost of Goods; Net Profit = Gross Profit − Taxes; then apply the ratio formula.
Analytical Discrimination (Profit Margin vs. ROI)
Key rules
- ›Profit Margin = Net Profit ÷ Revenue. Measures how much of each revenue dollar is kept as profit.
- ›ROI = (Return − Cost) ÷ Cost. Measures how much profit is earned per dollar invested.
- ›Both are expressed as percentages: multiply the decimal result by 100.
Common traps
- !Dividing profit by cost (ROI) when the question asks for Profit Margin (profit ÷ revenue).
Multi-Step Procedural Logic
Key rules
- ›Step 1: Sum all costs (fixed + variable + taxes as applicable).
- ›Step 2: Gross Profit = Revenue − COGS; Net Profit = Gross Profit − Other Expenses − Taxes.
- ›Step 3: Apply ratio formula to the result.
Common traps
- !Using Gross Profit in the formula when the question specifies Net Profit (after taxes).
Percentage Application
Key rules
- ›Convert decimal result to percent: multiply by 100 (e.g., 0.18 = 18%).
- ›When applying a tax rate: Net Profit = Gross Profit × (1 − tax rate).
Common traps
- !Leaving the answer as a decimal when the question asks for a percentage.
Interpretive Data Extraction
Key rules
- ›Extract: Revenue, total costs (raw materials + labor + overhead), and taxes.
- ›For comparative questions, calculate each product's ratio separately before ranking.
Common traps
- !Using one product's revenue with another product's costs in a multi-product comparison.
Arithmetical Accuracy
Key rules
- ›Long division precision matters. Carry at least two decimal places before converting to percent.
- ›Verify: Profit = Revenue − Total Costs before dividing.
